Outside...in the heat!

No Guyana did not make me a heat runner. I started with the temp in the mid 70's and ended at 80°F (26.7°C, 300°K). So, really, I'm doing pretty good to still be living at 300°K!

This run was better than my July 4th run, which contained the same amount of walking. The walking pattern I used here was:

2 miles run
.15 mile walk
.5 mile run
.1 mile walk
.25 mile run
.25 mile walk
.75 mile run

I should have just walked a full quarter mile that first walk break, but I overestimated my ability...again. You'd think I'd learn by now.

Three 1 mile runs

My Forerunner 220 was not up to the task of tracking my inside run for some reason today. Even after turning off the GPS for mile #3, it still was a 1/10th off. Monday, it worked great, so I'm not sure what's up with it.

Anyways, as the title says, I ran a mile, then rested. Ran another mile, then rested. Ran a third mile and stopped. Between miles, I was fiddling with my watch to see if I could get it to track correctly. I failed.

Maybe I'll stop by the running store and see if they can help me. I'll probably end up buying a foot pod sensor.

Back to the running

So, before I left for Guyana, I seriously considered buying a Garmin version of the Fitbit. I had even found and priced a model that would meet my need of running indoors without GPS. But, since I was leaving for Guyana, I figured I'd just wait to blow the $200 when I got back.

Then I began to wonder if my current running watch could perform that duty, and wonder of wonders, the Forerunner 220 does! So, today, I used my running watch to keep track of my indoor gym run. Yay, $200 not wasted!

Hoooo boy, hot in Guyana!

Safe and sound in Guyana! Tonight we have a crusade in Tain, so if you're in the area, come on out and see team USA!

We've had a lazy day so far just recovering from the long travel day yesterday.

I got up at 245 am to be over at Petes house at 330ish to catch a ride to the airport with him.

We left indy at 520 am,  and after stops in Atlanta and Miami, arrived in Georgetown around 930 pm.  After clearing customs, we had a 2 and a half hour bus ride to the village of Nigg.  I finally got to roll into bed around 130 am. I'm very grateful that the bedrooms are air conditioned!

Today we did venture out to a little store a couple of blocks away. I bought a coconut for all of 30 cents and am looking forward to cracking it. We saw some wildlife on the way including a very skinny dog, a dead puppy,  and a bloated rat floating belly up in the ditch. Smelled great!

Off to Guyana

Tomorrow morning, I leave for Guyana at 5:20 am. Brandy, the dogs, and the boys will be holding down the fort (and spending all our money).

Please consider praying for our team, our families, and most of all, that the Word of the Lord would be loud and clear and that people would come to know Jesus.

I might be able to update the blog while I'm there; if not, I will endeavor to give a report when I return. Remember, you still have the opportunity to give to Grace Bible Church for this mission, and if you contribute 100 million dollars, I think that you can convince them to leave me there.

In Christ,
Rusty

A little too ambitious

My sore legs just couldn't do it, so I gave myself a break. I did run the first 2.3 or so miles, then took one walk break of .14 miles and ran the rest.

Finally, a 5K ran

This run was indoors at the 1/7th mile track. 32 laps later, I've got 4.59 miles, by my calculations.

I ran the first 22 laps, so that's a pi run (3.14) and clocked a 34:54. That won't win any age groups, except the 0-1 age group, and maybe the 125-130 age group, but at least it's a start, and I ran the whole thing. yay.

My walk breaks are shorter in the gym as it's easier to keep track of 1/7th of a mile break. I should cut down my walking outside to .15 or so; I guess that would be easy to track. Anyways, I only took two walk breaks at laps 23 and 29.

72° + 87% humidity = YUCK!

Yeah, so, it really wasn't the heat; 72° is pretty nice, but 87% gummidity is just icky. Yes, that's right, I just invented a new word: gummidity. It's gummy humidity. You may start using it right away; you're welcome.

Even given the hellish environment, I managed to do better than Saturday timewise. I also ran the first 2.25 miles without a break. I wanted to do the first 2.5, but the gumminess got me. So, my walk breaks were:
2.25 miles run
.25 walk
.75 run
.25 walk
.5 run

Hopefully, Wednesday, I'll be able to hit that 2.5 miles straight and make it to 3 miles (or 3.1 as I'll probably do) on Thursday or Saturday.

On a different note, I prepared raw fish for lunch today and didn't die! Here's the recipe I used. I added the same quantity of cubed mangoes as avocado. I made a half batch, so that would mean a half an avocado as well as a half mango.

I also made a seaweed salad with spinach subbed for the seaweed because I didn't have any seaweed. So, I guess I just made a spinach salad with this recipe.

Finally, I cracked my first coconut today (it really was a banner day!). I took the following:
4 tbsp grated fresh coconut
4 tbsp cream
4 tsp raw honey
1/4 tsp cinnamon
I threw them all into a magic bullet blender and gave it a pretty good whirl. It was delicious!

If you couldn't tell, I'm onto a new diet; well, actually, this is really the first diet that I've tried. You can read all about it at http://products.mercola.com/nutritional-typing/. I tested out as protein type, so I'm trying to stick to the foods Dr. Mercola recommends. Of course, that'll all go out the window in Guyana...as will the running.

14.24 miles for the week

Happy Birthday to Michael Kent! My father-in-law turns 70 today and is super excited about being in a new racing age group. He'll run his first race in his new age group next week in Missoula, MT, the Missoula Half Marathon.

Last year, he clocked a 1:44:28 and placed 3rd in his age group. Unfortunately, he's struggling with an Achilles heel issue, so he doesn't expect to do as well this year.

As far as my run today, I broke it down into a 2 mile run, a 1 mile run, and a 1/2 mile run separated by 1/4 mile walks to recover. I also ran a new route over to Freedom Park here in Greenwood. See the route here. The thing I like about this new route is that I have a little more variety in the terrain. Although most of it is paved, I do run a short distance in a field, and there is a little bit more variation in elevation. Also, once I get my feet under me and by breath back, there is a sledding hill at this park that I plan on doing hill climbs, hill sprints, and other hill activities (rolling down...hopefully not).
